Alexander Zverev Battles Felix Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Showdown
Preamble
The inherent challenges of round-robin tennis mean during this phase of the ATP Finals we’re often left confused, hastily looking for a calculator and striving to determine the mind-boggling permutations of qualification. But tonight’s match between Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is straightforward. It’s a straight shootout: the victor sets up a semi-final matchup against Alcaraz at this championship finale; the unsuccessful competitor goes home.
The German is the frontrunner for this: the world No 3 is the more accomplished player, has been the champion at this event on two prior occasions and holds the advantage in their personal record with six victories against three defeats, securing victories in both their past encounters on an indoor hard court.
But … this is the surface on which Auger-Aliassime has claimed the bulk of his trophies, he’s riding a high after his remarkable turnaround against Shelton on midweek and he defeated Zverev in the US Championships initial phase in late summer. Additionally, conditions are faster in Turin than at the US Open venue, which works even more in the Canadian's favor.
Should Zverev be cautious, as he did against the Italian, and the Canadian presses the European player with his stinging serves and confident shots, there is a strong chance the North American athlete – the one-time phenom who was earlier slated ahead of Alcaraz and Sinner to take over from the legendary trio – who earns the dubious honour of playing against the world No 1 on Saturday.
Action commences: at around 20:30 in the host city, 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time.
