Blast Costs Three Police Officers Amid Eviction Action in Northern Italy
A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 people sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The blast took place as police and firefighters entered the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.
All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
One male and one female got detained at the scene and another man who escaped following the incident was found not long after. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.
The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area revealed the building left as a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
Financial Context
The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander told reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The official was convinced the explosion had occurred on a level above the entrance and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told local news, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
