Japan's Economy Contracts as Overseas Sales Face Impact by American Trade Duties
Japan's economy has experienced a drop for the first time in six quarters, largely caused by weakening exports because of recent US trade duties.
G7 Growth Standings
Japan has become the initial G7 economy to disclose an economic contraction in the latest quarter.
As the US yet to publish its GDP figures for Q3 2025, the present Group of Seven growth leaderboard display:
- France: 0.5 percent expansion
- United Kingdom: 0.1 percent
- Canada: 0.1 percent (provisional estimate)
- German economy: 0%
- Italy: 0%
- Japanese economy: -0.4%
Tourism Shares Decline during Diplomatic Dispute with Beijing
In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is experiencing an intensifying diplomatic tension with China regarding Taiwan.
Stocks in Japanese tourism and retail firms have fallen sharply after China urged its nationals to avoid traveling to Japan.
This move by Beijing heightened a political dispute that was sparked by statements from Tokyo's new prime minister about the possibility of deploying troops in the event of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The development triggered a wave of selling across Japanese tourism-related shares.
- Oriental Land stock fell by 5.7%
- Isetan Mitsukoshi tumbled by 11.3%
- Japan Airlines fell by 3.75%
"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and China's travel warning discouraging travel to Japan brings near-term challenges for consumer-facing sectors.
"Tourists from China account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, luxury retail, and hospitality especially at risk."
GDP Contraction Details
Japan's GDP fell by 0.4% in the third quarter, as industrial overseas shipments were impacted by tariffs imposed by the US this year.
Overseas shipments were a major factor of the contraction, falling by 1.2% compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.
Previously, the US administration had proposed Japan with a new 25% tariff on its products, which was later reduced to 15% when the two countries reached a trade deal.
Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3% compared to the previous quarter.
On an annualized basis, Japan's real gross domestic product shrank by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.
"The Japanese economic situation was solid in the initial six months of this year and today's GDP figures showed that momentum is halted for now.
I anticipate Japan's economy to be returning on a gradual growth trend going forward."
The White House has lately acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, lowering tariffs on food imports including beef, tomatoes, coffee and bananas amid growing concerns about increasing costs.
