Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
