Stupidity and Royal Self-Entitlement Ruined Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet

This episode commenced with a solitary photograph, arguably the most impactful ever snapped of a member of the monarchy.

There stood the Baron Killyleagh, arm-in-arm a teenage girl, while an associate grinned conspiratorially in the backdrop.

Absent that photograph, shot at a party in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the allegations of a young woman who stated she was moved across the ocean and forced to have perfunctory sexual encounters with a prince of the monarchy?

A strange, indicative gesture by someone who had overtly stated to have never heard of her, claimed he could never have had sex with her, and yet handed over a substantial sum of family money to avert a protracted lawsuit.

Over a Decade of Disgrace

Considering this, conversations of the royals acting firmly to sever ties with Andrew are wide of the mark. This scandal has continued for the largest portion of 15 years since that picture, and an additional photo of Andrew ambling pleasantly with a convicted sex offender surfaced.

  • Self-importance: How long did his family members, perhaps even his relatives, understand that Andrew was so presumptuous?
  • Problematic Connections: They must have known, if his staff and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some highly questionable associates given he openly welcomed them to palaces.
  • Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the monarchy did not know about his sexual proclivities, they certainly knew about his extravagance with public money.

Travel were printed in official documents: private aircraft transfers from the palace to a sporting venue and back again in time for dining, chartered planes instead of commercial flights, all for the benefit of "the frequent flyer".

World of Deference

Additionally the arrogance which expected subservience when he walked into a area or the profound obsession about his designations used on his correspondence in messages to his associates.

He could get away with it while his matriarch, who inexplicably spoiled him, was still alive. The sovereign did at least revoke him of official roles and military positions in the consequence of his disastrous and, as revealed, deceptive public statement six years ago.

Recent Developments

It was only in the last 14 days that events accelerated, following the release of biographical works giving more grim information of his conduct and that of his connections.

More information have again exposed Andrew's thinking that he could avoid being untruthful about his contact with a disgraced individual.

Society (and the journalists) were far in advance of the royals. There was no one of any significance to speak up for him, a consequence of all those years of presumption.

Institutional Fears

The more intelligent family members realized that. The primary concern is to hand down the crown, if not as previously at least intact and untarnished.

They have spent the last 190 years trying to undo the image of past sovereigns, proving they are beneficial, responsible and reactive to their citizens.

He was placing all that in danger in an time when respect and secrecy is no longer sufficient.

Aftermath

Ultimately, the famously uncertain sovereign was pushed additional. There was no other option. The palace had relinquished authority of the account.

Now it is the loss of titles and the persistent and lifetime social disgrace that will hurt Andrew most deeply.

  • Demotion: Reduced to just Mr Mountbatten-Windsor
  • Prior Instance: The primary monarch to forfeit his honorifics in recent history
  • Armed Forces: Particularly stinging given his role in the engagement

He is still a royal advisor, in principle able to stand in for the king, and he is still eighth in line to the throne, but not any of these will truly come to pass.

Coming Developments

Do individuals he meets still acknowledge him? Could they still forget themselves and call him Prince? Would they say Sir,

Of course, he is not retiring to an ordinary town, but to the sovereign's vast estate at a monarchical property.

In that place, he will be provided by the king with one of the royal residences and given some sort of private allowance.

This differs from his previous residence, where he paid a token lease for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit far, but even so it may not be adequate distance.

Unresolved Issues

The situation continues. There are still files in the custody of American legislators to be disclosed.

  • Parliamentary Interest: Might lawmakers demand more
  • Financial Investigation: Or investigate the waste of state resources
  • Judicial Potential: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his behavior

Possibly for the present the harm to the monarchy to the monarchy is limited. The statement from the palace was plainly that the removal of honorifics was what the sovereign, and notably other senior family members, wanted.

Altered Approach

An end to illusion that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, remarkably, the brief statement showed plainly that the monarchy were supporting the victim's version of occurrences.

Additionally, for the first time they ultimately showed concern for the affected individuals: "The measures are considered essential, despite the reality that he persists in refuting the allegations against him."

Ultimately it is arrogance, selfishness and inactivity that will kill the monarchy. In his folly, personal excess and venality, Andrew gives the impression never to have learned that reality.
