Texas Attorney General Sues Acetaminophen Manufacturers Over Autism Claims

Judicial Case
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump campaigning for the United States Senate, alleged pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding safety concerns of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is suing the producers of acetaminophen, asserting the corporations withheld alleged dangers that the drug created to pediatric neurological development.

The lawsuit follows a month after Former President Trump advocated an unverified association between using acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - throughout gestation and autism in children.

The attorney general is taking legal action against J&J, which formerly manufactured the drug, the sole analgesic recommended for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which presently makes it.

In a declaration, he stated they "misled consumers by profiting off of suffering and marketing drugs without regard for the potential hazards."

Kenvue states there is lacking scientific proof linking Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These manufacturers deceived for years, knowingly endangering numerous people to line their pockets," Paxton, from the Republican party, stated.

The manufacturer stated officially that it was "seriously troubled by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the reliability of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the well-being of American women and children."

On its website, the company also stated it had "regularly reviewed the relevant science and there is no credible data that shows a established connection between consuming paracetamol and autism."

Organizations acting on behalf of physicians and healthcare providers agree.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has declared paracetamol - the key substance in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to address discomfort and fever, which can pose significant medical dangers if not addressed.

"In more than two decades of investigation on the utilization of paracetamol in gestation, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the use of acetaminophen in any stage of gestation leads to neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the group said.

The court filing cites latest statements from the previous government in claiming the drug is allegedly unsafe.

Last month, Trump caused concern from health experts when he told women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to take Tylenol when ill.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that medical professionals should contemplate reducing the use of Tylenol, while also stating that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in young ones has not been established.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who oversees the FDA, had pledged in April to conduct "a massive testing and research effort" that would establish the source of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But experts cautioned that finding a sole reason of autism - believed by scientists to be the result of a complex mix of genetic and surrounding conditions - would prove challenging.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of enduring cognitive variation and disability that affects how persons experience and relate to the world, and is diagnosed using physician assessments.

In his court filing, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is seeking US Senate - claims the manufacturer and J&J "intentionally overlooked and attempted to silence the evidence" around paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action aims to force the corporations "destroy any commercial messaging" that asserts acetaminophen is safe for women during pregnancy.

This legal action mirrors the concerns of a assembly of parents of minors with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD who took legal action against the makers of acetaminophen in 2022.

The court threw out the legal action, declaring investigations from the plaintiffs' authorities was not conclusive.
