The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
