UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
